If you’ve been lucky enough to fish on a charter with Captain Jordan Ellis you know his enthusiasm for all species of fish is something that doesn’t wane. One group of fish though, holds his attention more than most others. Billfish. And, … among the billfish species his favorite is perhaps swordfish. Big honking swordfish, preferably caught in the daytime.
That’s just what he did last week on back-to-back trips out of Venice, LA.

Swordfish are known as denizens of the deep, dark sea. They live at great depths, only rarely come up to the top half of the water column, and they most often feed at night.
Going for swordfish is always an adventure. It’s even more so when you target swordfish during the day. It’s quite a treat, which requires patience, skill, precision, and an alert attitude by everyone on the boat.
The captains at Mexican Gulf Fishing Co. have all caught their fair share of daytime swordfish. This summer is no exception, but through May — the swordfish action has been frequent — and rewarding.

Many people send us emails and facebook questions asking what it’s like to spend a day with Mexican Gulf Fishing Co. We tell them, it’s like any other good day you’ve had, … only better.
Half joking of course, and half serious. A day fishing with any of our five captains is as good as you want it to be. Mother nature doesn’t always cooperate, but we are always able to show our charters a grand time. We know it isn’t a secret that we’re almost always able to put our charters on big fish, … lots of them, too.
Captain Travis Mayeux, who runs the f/v Sweat Shop for MGFC, has had a rock solid March, and a great start this April.
Not to be outdone by Capt. Jordan Ellis’ recent marlin escapade, Travis put two of his charters on nice fish with back-to-back trips last week.
Jarrett Barnett was the first to hit. Fishing on a Monday, while chumming for yellowfin tuna, Mayeux thought he saw a blue marlin lurking below.
“I thought for sure we had seen one earlier in the day, and this time I was positive,” says Travis. “I dropped an extra large hard tail down on a bomb and she just smoked it on the way down.”
That fish hit so hard, so fast, and so close to the boat, it was almost boat side in first five minutes.
