MG Fishing

Born and raised in New Orleans, I’ve been fishing since I was big enough to hold a pole, and I began working for hire when I was seventeen. Once became a captain, I’ve never looked back. This is what I was born to do.

Hi, I’m Capt. Billy Wells, and I fish from Venice, LA.

My satisfaction comes from seeing the excitement, and smiles and exhaustion that come when clients defeat a big fish. Nothing compares to sinking the gaff into a large yellowfin tuna and seeing the beautiful contrast of streaming blood in cobalt blue water. Nothing beats catching large tuna, seeing the look on people’s faces as they wonder if the fish will ever stop and hearing, “I can’t believe a fish can pull that hard.”

My philosophy is to run and run — to cover water. The fish are out there; it’s my job to find them.

  • strive to be the best
  • make the most of every day
  • go big or go home.

As far as my fishing career, in my teens I did some guiding inshore for trout and redfish and became a deckhand offshore on a 36-foot Topaz.

In 1998,  I bought my first boat, a 25-foot Mako, and today, I own a custom-built Freeman Catamaran, called “Wild Bill.”

One helluva fishing machine, this boat was built for me, to my specs. We have repowered it with 350 yamahas and outfitted it with  twin Simrad NSE12, a full complement of Furuno electronics, Sirius weather to keep us one step ahead of Mother Nature, and Sirius satellite radio for clients’ listening pleasure are just a few of its amazing features.

You saw it on the drawing board, and you saw it at the Miami Boat Show. It caught your eye riding on the Interstate from Florida to Louisiana, and this week ahead, … it makes its debut as the newest Freeman in our fleet of Freeman’s at The Mexican Gulf Fishing Company — a 42 foot Freeman Boatworks masterpiece.

That’s right — the f/v Wild Bill is ready for charters from Venice, Louisiana.

Offshore Venice — is off to a good start in 2017. We’re seeing monster yellowfin tuna, plenty of blackfin tuna, wahoo of great size, and temps (water and air) that you just won’t believe.

“It’s been wild,” says Captain Wade Wells. “We’re seeing really nice temps making for some nice warm days. It’s bringing in the fish, too,” said Wade.

Captain Jordan Ellis agrees. “I’ve put customers on yellowfin and wahoo and we’re surprised at the size of both species. The ambient temps are great, and the water temps running a bit higher than normal too. It’s been a fun start to the new year. Looks to me like Spring is gonna be awesome.”

Justin Rackley, known as Lakeforkguy, creates fishing videos on youtube and other social platforms. Lakeforkguy travels to freshwater and saltwater fishing spots to explore new fish species and fishing techniques to show as many fishing places as possible and help viewers catch more fish, and recently he wanted to make a yellowfin tuna video.

In this video, he fished with MGFC out of Venice Marina. They targeted yellowfin tuna and swordfish, and got what they came for. View this yellowfin tuna video, and see what a day of offshore fishing is like when you fish with MGFC.
